THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE TAN ETHNIC GROUP Part 2

The Hu Nan Tan Group, mostly concentrated in the Provinces around the various Districts of Xiang Dong ( 湘 东) , but with Cha Ling ( 茶 陵) as the centre-point. Over an area of tens of miles, all covered by Tan descendants. Thus, it is explanatory that the population is large. The second place is You District ( 攸 县), Xiang Xiang ( 湘 乡) Zhang Sha (长 沙), Ling Xiang ( 酃 县), Heng Yang ( 衡 阳), Heng Shan (衡 山), Xiang Tan ( 湘 潭), and Liu Yang ( 浏 阳) .

The population is also dense. The rest of the Districts, Tan descendants are also seen, and they are comparable with the Tan in Guangdong. With regard to the equal distribution of the group branches, because of lack of detail records and lists for inspection, it is difficult to identify. Liu Yang Tan Qiu Sheng ( 谭 秋 笙) wanted to revise the Tan Ethnic Group List for the whole Provincial of Hu Nan ( 湖 南), but could not complete because of unrest in the country.

However, according to Cha Ling Ming Gong student ( 茶 陵 明 贡 生) Tan Shi Zhong ( 谭 时 中) revising the Tan’s Ethnic Group List, as well as the revision by Scholar Tan Yu Rui ( 谭 玉 瑞) of the Ming Dynasty, both carried the Preface by the Great Scholar of Ming, Li Dong Yang ( 李 东 阳). It meant they knew most Tans from Hu Nan are the descendants of the Tang Dynasty Ke Yi Gong (可 奕 公). Ke Yi Gong lived in the year of Xian Tong (咸 通) , about 1,150 years from now. Five generations Palace Closed Guard General Tan Jin Po ( 谭 进 颇 将 军) was the eldest grandson of Ke Yi.

The Highest Graduate of Song, Tan Yong Shi ( 谭 用 式) was also the descendant of Ke Yi. There is a Ke Yi Ancestral Hall in Cha Ling which is very big. In addition, according to the Tan Ancestral Hall and Liu Yang Tan’s Ethnic Group List, emphasized that his grand father as after Chong Ann Hou ( 崇 安 候) of Ming Tan Yuan ( 谭 渊), moved from his residence in Fu Jian ( 福 建) Qing Liu ( 清 流) to live in Zhang Sha ( 长 沙) in Hu Nan, then moved to Liu Yang.

It was recorded in the Ethnic Group Record of Guangdong Ren Hua clique descendants of Hong Zhi Palace Administration, that his fourth generation descendants had already dispersed and moved to the Districts of Hu Nan Gui Yang, Ru City, until the descendants of Tan City. Because it was neighbouring with Hu Nan, there was also portion of them moved in.

The Tan in Hu Bei and Jiangxi, because its land was neighbouring Hu Nan, its clique branch distribution area was nearer to Hu Nan Tans. Regarding the Guangdong old list, there was also those passing down from the Tang Dynasty. It was stated that some ancestors of Hong Shi also moved from Hu Nan to Jiangxi, then from Jiangxi to Guangdong.

The Tans from Guangxi ( 广 西) and Hainan ( 海 南), also moved from Guangdong and spread out, like Gui Zhou ( 贵 州), the Tans also contributed their share of shift. The Tans in Jiangsu Dan Yang ( 丹 阳 谭 氏), they claimed that their forefathers Yuan Jie Gong ( 元 介 公) moved from He Bei Ji Zhou (冀 州) to here.

Its descendants spread through covering the following township in the Dan Yang ( 丹 阳) District: Dong He ( 东 河), Tian Tou ( 田 头), Yu Zhuang ( 雨 庄), Bei Gang ( 北 冈), Zheng Jiang ( 镇 江) District: Huang Xu ( 黄 墟), Ma Ji Shan ( 马 积 山), Ju Cun ( 巨 村), Jin Tan ( 金 坛) District: Sai Tian ( 赛 田), Wu Jin ( 武 进)
District: Zhong Tang Qiao ( 中 塘 桥) . Ju Rong ( 巨 容)District: Ying Qiao Xu ( 荫 桥 墟) etc. The population was large.

In addition, when the Tang was weak for five generations, Dan Yang had Yin Chang Gong ( 胤 昌 公). In view of his achievement in the war, he was taken in to marry the Princess as the son-in-law of the King. He was also awarded a five-storey building to live with the Princess.
