Tan series came from woman’s surname, descendant of Han Yuan Huang Di, till the Tan Kingdom then only awarded priority by Zhou. There was no evidence as to when it started.
Legend had it that King Yu met the war lords at Tu Mountain ( 涂 山). Hundreds of thousand came with invitations. At the end, only 3,000 Kingdoms left. King Wu inspected the parade, which comprised 1,800 Kingdoms. Eventually only 1,200 Kingdoms left behind after moving east.
Until the end of the period, that was 242 years, as written in the Chun Qiu Jing legendry, the respective lords tried their best to conquer each other until there were only hundred odd Kingdoms left.
Tan was one of them. However, Huang Di had too many descendants which was difficult to name them. Therefore when Huang Di ‘Zhuanxu ( 黄 帝 颛 顼)’ ascend to the throne, and until Bo Yi ( 伯 益), the great grandson of Huang Di was only awarded the surname of YING ( 赢). Another story was that after the Son of Huang Di, Shao Hao 少 昊), from Di Ku ( 帝 喾), then Ji until Zhou, all used the surname Ji. Then only awarded the meat for prayer by Zhou, and received allowances from the Tan Kingdom and eventually became Ji Xiao Gong.
According to tradition, he enjoyed the same rank with all those awarded the same status. From this, it was very near to what was recorded in the later report. However, Liu Yang, Mr. Tan Si Tong strongly stuck to the one mentioned earlier.
