The New Surname Record: Tan, the series derived from the surname ji (姬), which was after Zhuanxu.
Edited Ancient Edition of General Publication: Tan, name of Kingdom. Lu Shi remarked: Surname YING, Bo Yi was an official of Shun, because his master had many children, he was granted the surname YING. The same Edition of the Record also mentioned that Tan, a Viscount with surname YING.
Zuo Zhuan: Tan Zi came to the Palace and called Shao Hao ‘my Grandfather’.
Nan Hai Bian Fang Ethnic Group List Put Tan Sequence: Tan was after Shao Hao.
Shi Xing Tan Chen Public Office Remarked after revising the Ethnic Group Name List: Remembered our group right from the Zhou Dynasty awarded Tan Zi at the Ji town in Tan Kingdom. After which receiving allowances and use Tan as our surname.
Guangxi Si En District Jilin Po Po Zhou Cun Great Hall Engraved Tomb: Tracking down the hierarchy, the early source started from Zhou Ji ( 周 姬). At that time, Wu Wang ( 武 王) was ordered to award all members of the ethnic group, distribute the benefits to Ji Xiao Gong from the Tan Kingdom, that was Shandong Ji Nan Administration alienated land. Later applied the Kingdom’s name to call Tan Gong. See poem: It could be traced that Tan Gong administered the Kingdom with equality.
Tan Si Tong Liu Yang Tan Shi Pu records: Ancient Records was an unsystematic combination of facts remarked that the surname Tan was from Zhuanxu. It was not from the original text as well as not knowing in detail the history of the surname.
The record by Gu Dong Gao Shi Chun Qiu Big Events List put Tan as the second surname, that was already not correct. Qin Jia Moa stated that: Zuo ordered Tan Zi to the Palace, called Shao Hao as grandfather; Toh Yu thought it was his surname; whereas History Record Qian Fu commented thought it was surname YING.
Then posed a question mark, then college history recorded Ji family, in between stated that on the 2nd year attacked Tan ( 郯), Tan Zi ( 郯 子) escaped to Ju ( 莒); then only realized that the word Tan ( 郯)as recorded by the two records was actually the Tan ( 谭) as recorded in the Zuo Zhuang ( 左 传) because the two characters had the same phonetic.
Therefore it was very easy to be mistaken. Duan Yu Cai ( 段 玉 裁 氏) also remarked that the Ji family was written as Tan, this was bare proof that what Si-Ma ( 司 马) had proven was correct. It was also confirmed by Qin ( 秦).
However, the word Tan ( 郯) as stated in the Tan Zi ( 郯 子) went to the Palace, it was his own surname.,specially when Si Ma Qian ( 司 马 迁) Wang Fu (王 符) mentioned Tan ( 郯) was actually Tan ( 谭). From this , it was confirmed that Tan ‘s surname was actually YING.
The General History listed the Kingdom where Zhou could not be used as surname, but until now, it was not being identified. The Road History Tan and Tan were all from the Kingdom of YING. It was mistakenly stated when Qin Fu argued that the second Tan as original surname, and at the same time thought to be YING.
It was also stated that the three Tan as stated above was excessive. The Tong Zhi stated that; Tan ( 覃) was originally Tan ( 谭), when took away ‘yan’ ( 言) to become Tan ( 覃), Also stated in the six surnames in Yun Ba Nan ( 云 巴 南), there is this Tan ( 谭). Which appeared after Pang Hu ( 盘 瓠). But this was a different Tan. The surname of Chen Shi Yuan was Zhui. The phonetic of Tan ( 覃) included Tan ( 谭).
According to the thousand surname, they were the Hong Nong Ethnic ( 弘 农) Group. The mixed phonetic included Tan which could be pronounced as Xin ( 寻), which was identified by the Thousand Surname, a Guang Ping Group. According to record, Tan minus ‘yan’ still pronounced as Tan.
Therefore, the one character with two pronunciations would automatically become two ethnic groups. Later, it was decided to remove one and stick to another only.
The original one had since been deleted from the dictionary. Later Liao Yong Xiang in his “Closed Friends “ said that Tan Kingdom Ping Yin District was destroyed by Qin,” but there was no evidence of such event.
